In an unprecedented event for the Uruguayan economy, cellulose consolidated its position as the country's leading export item in July, surpassing beef, which historically led exports. In September, pulp sales reached US$ 260 million, representing an increase of 36% compared to the same month of the previous year.

Pulp has proved to be a key driver of Uruguayan export growth in recent years, strengthening its position in both the European and Asian markets. This achievement reflects the growing importance of the forestry sector in Uruguay's export structure, driven by the operation of large industrial plants such as Montes del Plata and UPM. The consolidation of cellulose as the main export item was largely due to the start-up of the UPM plant in Paso de los Toros, the third one installed in the country.

The European Union was the main destination for pulp exports in September, accounting for 54% of total sales, with a value of US$ 139 million. China, which has significantly increased its demand in recent months, absorbed 39% of exports of the product, consolidating its position as a strategic partner for Uruguay. Other relevant markets were the United States and Argentina, although with a smaller share.

This rebound in cellulose exports occurs in a context of generalized growth in Uruguayan foreign trade. In September, export requests totaled US$ 1,182 million, an increase of 14% compared to the same month in 2023, also driven by soybean sales, which grew by 89%.

Pulp production also had a positive impact on the development of logistics infrastructure, especially in ports and free trade zones. It has also contributed significantly to the generation of direct and indirect employment, which reinforces its central role in the national economy.
