Economist Mariana Ferreira has officially taken office as executive director of Uruguay XXI, accompanied by Martín Mercado as deputy executive director. Ferreira, who was the manager of the agency’s Competitive Intelligence department until now, and Mercado, who has vast experience in development and international relations, will lead the agency’s work in boosting the country’s economic growth. To this end, they will continue to promote the attraction of productive investments, the export of goods and services, and consolidate the country’s image.

This change in the management of Uruguay XXI comes in the wake of the inauguration on March 1 of Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi. With this transition, the country’s political, economic, and social stability, as well as its democratic values, continue to be fundamental pillars for the growth and development of Uruguay, guaranteeing a favorable framework for investment and the internationalization of its companies.

“It is an honor to lead Uruguay XXI in this new stage. Macroeconomic, political, and social stability and institutional and legal security are the main reasons foreign investors choose us. We will continue supporting companies that export goods and services to diversify their markets and promote the country’s brand,” said Ferreira.

Mercado highlighted the importance of coordination with the private sector and the strengthening of international cooperation. “Uruguay has growth potential. We will work with a great team to strengthen the links between the public and private sectors and to continue opening doors on the international stage,” he said.

Ferreira has a degree in Economics from the University of the Republic and a Master’s in Financial Economics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. She has worked at Uruguay XXI since 2011, holding the position of Competitive Intelligence Manager, and previously served as Manager of the Economic Consulting Department at CPA/Ferrere. In addition, she has been a professor of Macroeconomics in the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Administration at the University of the Republic since 2003.

Mercado has a degree in Political Science from New Jersey City University in the United States and a Master’s degree in International Affairs with a specialization in Social and Economic Development from The New School University in New York. He worked for 12 years at the Municipality of Canelones, first as director of International Cooperation, then as head of International Relations at the Investment Promotion Agency, and, since 2020, as director of Industrial Development.

With this renewal in its management, Uruguay XXI reaffirms its commitment to continue promoting the country’s economic growth, consolidating its strategy of attracting foreign investment, and strengthening the internationalization of Uruguayan companies.
