Six Uruguayan brands bring their ethical, sustainable and innovative fashion to Coterie

Savia, the farra, Pastiche, Babila, Molt and Coppelia will participate with Uruguay XXI in the next edition of the New York show

Uruguay’s fashion industry is ready to make a statement at Coterie 2024, one of the most prestigious events for contemporary fashion. Six Uruguayan brands—Savia, the farra, Pastiche, Babila, Molt, and Coppelia—will present their unique collections in the "Apparel – Contemporary Advance" section, showcasing their creativity and craftsmanship to international buyers. What sets these brands apart is their deep commitment to environmental and social responsibility, reflected in their production processes. From the use of natural and recycled materials to minimal-waste practices, the Uruguay Collective brings a fresh perspective to global fashion, combining traditional techniques with modern design elements. Buyers will find an exciting range of offerings, from streetwear and accessories to timeless wardrobe staples, all created with exceptional attention to detail and quality.

Pastiche is a streetwear brand run by the Ottonello sisters. They focus on creating slow-fashion clothing using denim and knitted fabrics with a unisex style. The brand has already participated in the Capsule fair and has since built up a portfolio of multi-brand wholesale customers who make continuous purchases. According to Florencia Ottonello, the garments that attracted the most attention were handmade and produced in Uruguay.

Something in common offers the farra, a brand that, according to its creators, works with time and artisanal production. Its value proposition involves the innovation of ancestral techniques that represent Uruguay.

“We bet on a conscious public and are a sustainable brand; we do not generate waste, and everything we produce is sold. There is no leftover fabric, no leftover yarn,” said the brand’s manager, Tini Markowicz. The brand already attended Coterie last year, and thanks to this participation, they received purchase orders from the Urban Outfitters group, the renowned U.S. multi-brand fashion platform.

A sincere commitment to sustainable development is present in all brands traveling to New York. Molt is a three-year-old apparel company, and this will be its first experience at Coterie. “It was born being as responsible as possible to minimize the social and environmental impact,” explained its manager.

Molt produces in proximity to its points of sale to minimize its carbon footprint and seeks to be as transparent as possible in its production processes and labor. Its timeless products are closet items that can last over time due to their quality and design. Their materials are natural, and they use recycled plastics from industrial waste in their sports line.

Savia has already begun the internationalization process, but they consider that they are still taking the first steps. This is the second time they have participated with Uruguay XXI in Coterie, and on the first occasion, they managed to make sales with three boutiques in New Jersey, Texas, and Florida, two of them recurring. “Our goal at Coterie is also to maintain ties with these boutiques,” said one of its managers.

Their exports included linen products with handmade details, dresses, and tops. “What attracted the most attention was the added value of the handwork and the combination of crochet and linen techniques, in addition to the metalized leather,” assured Lucía Torchello. Savia is committed to having a varied product portfolio and attention to detail.

Leather is one of the key materials used by Babila, a Uruguayan brand participating in the Coterie Fair for the first time. Like the farra, Babila produces items according to demand, avoiding the accumulation of large quantities. This approach enables them to tailor their orders to meet the buyer’s specific needs. The company’s manager describes it as an artisanal enterprise that creates high-quality, long-lasting garments.

Coppelia creates clothing for women and children, prioritizing ethics and manual work, and believes in “patient and conscious” fashion. In addition, it uses particular techniques and the mixture of fabrics to achieve original products.

The participation of these Uruguayan brands at Coterie highlights the combination of creative talent, high-quality production, and a strong commitment to sustainability.
