Punta del Este had an exciting day with the departure of the eleven teams docked to embark on the second leg and third race of the Clipper Race circumnavigation to Cape Town, South Africa.
Punta del Este was the stopover for the intrepid Clipper Race crew, with a great welcome and Uruguayan hospitality from day one. The race start day was the same, according to the event organizers. A crowd of families and locals bid farewell to the sailors who ventured to their next ocean crossing: the South Atlantic.
After the final farewell hugs, the crew lined up for team photos and received a special gift and best wishes from the Commodore of the Yacht Club Punta del Este, Juan Etcheverrito, along with the British Ambassador to Uruguay, Faye O’Connor, and the U.S. Ambassador to Uruguay, Heide B. Fulton.
On Wednesday, October 11, the Uruguayan yacht Yacht Club Punta del Este (YCPE) arrived first in the Clipper Round the World Race, which had the port of Punta del Este as its finish line. At around 8:00 p.m., the boat skippered by Fernando Antía was received with emotion for its historic victory.
The Yacht Club Punta del Este was the winning team in Race 2: Hundred Years Cup. The Uruguayan team representing Yacht Club Punta del Este sailed triumphantly to their home port after winning the 5,300-mile race across the Atlantic from Puerto Sherry to Uruguay.
