The latest report by Ocean Science & Technology, which measures innovation and the number of patents related to renewable energy projects, ranks Uruguay in eighth place worldwide.

The study highlights that Uruguay has made significant progress in adopting renewable energies. It points out that 98% of the country’s power comes from renewable sources and is currently marking an important step towards the second energy transformation.

The report stresses that Uruguay is self-sufficient in terms of renewable energy and exports its surplus to neighboring countries such as Argentina.

Globally, in the period analyzed, the report recorded a 76% increase in renewable energy patent processes, reaching 61,790 patents in 2021.

In the case of Uruguay, its participation in the world ranking reflects its commitment to sustainability and innovation in the energy sector. “As part of a region that leads in the adoption of clean energy, Uruguay is consolidating its position as a global benchmark in the transition to a more sustainable and efficient energy future,” says Ocean Science & Technology.

The report analyzes 81 countries between 2020 and 2021 and reveals that Latin America is among the most advanced regions in the world in renewable energy projects. Over a quarter of primary energy comes from renewable sources, double the world average.

Uruguay leads Latin America, along with Chile, Ecuador, and Guatemala, while China, the Philippines, Cyprus, the United States, India, and Croatia complete the global top 10.
