According to the latest report from the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2024, published by Transparency International, Uruguay has made significant strides in its fight against corruption, establishing itself as the “cleanest” country in the Americas. With a score of 76 out of 100, Uruguay ranks 13th among 180 countries evaluated, surpassing Canada (15th) and the United States (28th). Chile follows in the region, ranking 32nd globally.

This advancement represents an increase of three points from the previous year when Uruguay scored 73 and ranked 16th. This progress demonstrates the country’s ongoing commitment to transparency and integrity within the public sector.

One of Uruguay’s key strengths is its robust institutions. The country boasts stable democratic institutions, excellent environmental data management, and effective channels for citizen participation. Furthermore, Uruguay has implemented policies regarding access to public information and open data since 2008 and has been a member of the Open Government Partnership since 2011. These initiatives enhance transparency and accountability, strengthening citizens’ trust in the government.

On a global scale, the 2024 CPI report highlights that corruption remains a serious issue in many parts of the world, with the global average stagnating at 43 points. However, Uruguay stands out for its progress and leadership in the region, serving as a model for effective practices in the fight against corruption.

This recognition reinforces Uruguay’s image as a country dedicated to transparency, integrity, and good governance—fundamental values essential for sustainable development and attractive to foreign investment.
